Maybe he has gotten into a routine of waking up at 4 to pee. You could try making him wait a little longer each morning before letting him out.

Maybe at 10-15 min intervals. First night make him wait 10 mins...try this a couple nights then move to 20 mins so on and so forth. This is what I had to do with Buck when I had had it with him waking up at 5am everyday. By the time he hit 7 months old he stopped doing that. He is 10 months old now. He even lets me sleep in till 9am on weekends! YAY!

Provided that your pup is healthy and has no bladder issues give this a shot. It could work.

Okay, I am trying a slightly different strategy tonight. We were taking him out about 8:00 or 8:30 and then at 10:30. Tonight he was out at 7:30 and I am waiting until 10:30 to take him back out. Of course, if he goes to the door I will take him out, but otherwise I am going to make him wait. He also hasn't slept as much this afternoon and this evening quite as much as he has been.

So I am hoping that he will take a big pee at 10:30 and sleep later!

By the way, he does not lift his leg yet so he is not really into marking territory. He has watched the older lab, but for some reason this guy still squats. But the older lab also was in no hurry to lift his leg.

We take Rowan's water away at 7:30 - she goes outside 2-3 times between then and her bedtime at 10:30. She is only 3 months old ~ and now holds it until 6 am.
I am sure it is a habit that has been formed.

Buck doesn't lift his leg either. He's 10 months old. I don't think it matters really. :P

Hope things are making progress in the 4am wake call.
