    DefaultPotty Training--Going to the Door?

    Hi all!

I have a 4 1/2 month old black lab. He has been a lot of work but is absolutely amazing. He has only had 3 accidents since we got him 4 weeks ago which were completely our fault (not paying attention to his signals). He is learning to go potty in the same spot and often goes to the spot on his own when we lead him outside on leash and let him go, but he has not learned to alert us by going to the door.

I've heard about using bells, etc. Any tips...? Is it a matter of time before he learns this/maturity?

    Thank you .

We used Bells. Ender got it within a couple of days. He was 3 months old at the time.

Bells work great. You can buy any bell you want, but make sure it is big enough or loud enough to be heard. Someone here has a nice website for bells for this purpose, but I just bought a nice sounding one and hung it on a ribbon at my back door instead. Everytime you take your pup out, ring it. After a little while ask him to ring it for you - some have taken their dogs paw and simulated hitting the bell with it til they get it, I wound up asking Abby to touch the bell with her nose everytime. It doesn't take them long to catch on.

This bell training seems really cool, but how do you get the dogs to stop chewing on it? Gannon is constantly grabbing his bell and playing tug o war against the door. He loves the sound.

We've also had great success with the bells.

Thank you. I will consider the bell option. Any ideas with what to do when he is downstairs with us? We are training him to go to our slider out the back but that is upstairs. Thanks!
