Strider is our 9 week puppy and he's a big guy.* He's 18 lbs when the vet weighed him.* We're feeding him IAMS Large Breed Puppy Food.* The bag recommends for his weight about 3.5 cups per day.* He barely wants to eat 2 cups and has enough after that...* Is this going to be OK for him?* Should we alter his feeding?* He's currently getting fed twice a day (1 cup per feeding)
Bosco is 8 months now, but when he was 9 weeks old, I was feeding him 3 cups a day; 1 cup morning, 1 cup afternoon and 1 cup supper time.
P.S: Strider is a cutie-pie!!! ;D

We were feeding Fergus about 1 cup 3X a day at his age...and he was about the same weight as Strider! I wouldn't worry about feeding him what the bag suggests, it's only a guideline. You know your puppy the best, if he doesn't want to eat that much right now I wouldn't worry, he'll let you know when he's hungry!! He's adorable by the way!!

3X/day for the first 6 months is the preferred method, if possible. Also, many suggest adding water to the kibble. Most bags overstate the amount of food to give.

Gotcha, thanks for the feedback... ! It seems he's satisfied with about 3cups daily... After about 20 minutes, he has no interest in eating any more, and we don't want to leave food out all the time either...
My advice is basically the same as everyone else's; I would suggest offering a 1/3 of the total amount he should be getting, three times a day at this age. Let him eat until he looses interest, and then take it away. Feed him again at his next meal.

Throw the ball, damn it!
No advice (don't have a puppy yet!) just wanted to say your puppy is ADORABLE!
Thanks, Debra, he is a handful of cuteness...
Thanks everyone, we're going to try your advice...!
I have talked to two vets and my breeder. They all have told me that switching to adult food after 3 months is completely acceptable and allows them to grow at a slower rate as to prevent any stress on their bones. I feed my 12 week old 3/4c * 3 times a day. We just made the switch to adult food. She is 26# today.
We just got another yellow lab pup, he is 8 wks old and a little pistol, now I know why we named him Ruger. Ruger will eat about a cup a day, I ask the vet and they said if he seems to be ok with it dont worry. I just feel like he isnt getting enough to eat. But he is full of energy lots of it so I guess he is good. Your Pup is soooo cut...
