you know how your dog becomes fixated on your hand when you have treats to give?
here is a little game i play with luke and taylor, and it is really fun for all.
when your dog stares at your treat filled hand, waiting for the treat, hold on to the treat.* do not give.* do not correct.* do not say anything.
keep your fist closed and become a silent statue.
wait until your dog looks up at your face and makes eye contact.
it may take a while, but your dog will do this on their own eventually.
you can say their name softly if you get tired of waiting.*
as soon as eye contact is made, you praise and give the treat.
take another treat in your hand and watch your dog again become fixated on your hand.
again, wait for the eyes to travel upward and lock with yours.
praise and treat.
it's such a simple thing, but i think it's fun.
you can also incorporate this Watch Me type of behavior when practicing commands.*
i think it helps to keep my dogs focused on me and not just the food rewards.
