    DefaultLab puppy underweight

Hi I am new to the lab breed. I recently bought an 8 week old chocolate lab puppy. The previous owners said he is full blooded but wanted someone's opinion. The vet said he is about 3 or 4 pounds underweight due to the previous owners not feeding him properly. He is currently 5.6 pounds and getting bigger. He is solid brown with hazel eyes and has webbed feet. I have uploaded the best picture I have of him. If you could just give me your opinion on whether or not he looks full blooded I would appreciate it. Thanks!

He looks quite small for his age. My Bacon is almost 11 weeks and he weighs 20 lbs. How much are you feeding him? Is it a good quality food? At this age, bacon was eating 1 cup, 2 meals a day. However, his small size may just be because he is going to be a smaller boy (bacon's father is a 85 pound yellow lab, so we expect him to be about the same).

As for his pedigree, He looks like a full blood lab, but without proper registration papers and a pedigree, no one can be sure.

For now, give him lots of love, play time, and naps!! You will be surprised how much they sleep!! Good luck!!

I am feeding him 1 cup 3 times a day. I've only had him a week now and since I've had him he's put on about 1.5 pounds. He is still underweight so I'm hoping he will catch up. The previous owners said his dad was 80+ pounds so hoping he will get close to that. Oh and I'm feeding him puppy chow. My vet told me to continue him on that.

Please stop feeding puppy chow!!!!! it is full of fillers and isnt good for your puppy. Slowly change him to a different food. We have Bacon on Nutro Large Breed Puppy Chicken and Rice formula. I would go to a local pet store and ask for suggestions. Make sure that you look at the ingredients and at least the first two are meat. I'm not saying Nutro is magic, but Bacon does really well on it, has a shiny thick coat, and minimal poo.

There are many impressive show breeders that feed Purina Puppy and Dog Chow. There are better foods out there but it's not as bad as Ol' Roy or Kibbles and Bits.

Are you sure they're using Puppy & Dog Chow and not better Purina products like Purina Pro Plan or Purina One?
