DefaultTraining Advice Needed-15 month old puppy

Hi everyone, I am new to the forum and need some advice. Our 14 year old lab passed away in May and it is time to have another member of the family. Since my husband and I both work we are considering an older puppy.

A reputable breeder is looking to place a 15 month old English lab that won a few points in shows, but in the long run,he does not feel she will go very far. We have met her, she is house and crate trained and friendly.

The issue is her manners. When we arrived she bounded out of the house and jumped all over us. She settled down in about minute. Additionally, she does not know some basic commands - sit, lay down, or come.

So, how hard is it to train a 15 month old puppy? Is obedience class the way to go?

Many thanks! This forum is a great resource.

I think Labs are trainable most of their lives so I don't think being 15 months old will be any impediment.

re: bounding out of the house and jumping all over you -- maybe it's typical Lab enthusiasm &/or a lack of enough
daily exercise, or lack of training.

Did you train your previous Lab? Are you familiar with how to do it?

I strongly recommend you get some of the books or pamphlets by Dr. Patricia McConnell on training.

Also, if it'll fit with your schedule, you might have two 10-15 minute training sessions a day, each one just before 2
regular meals. That way you can take some of the kibble from the usual meal and use it as rewards for obeying the
commands you'll be teaching (Sit, Down, Leave it, Give, Fetch, etc.).

I'll be enormously surprised if you're not pleased with the rapidity of learning.

I'll either ETA Patrica McConnell's website if I can locate it soon enough to get back within the 30, 60, or 90 seconds
time limit JL's new administration allows to edit any posts we've made OR, if I'm slower and that won't work, add
    another post.

    Happy Training!!

Thank you. I was able to find her website and will spend some time educating myself. And yes, brought our last lab home at about 8 weeks and she was very trainable. Have a great evening!

They're never too old to learn. My boys are 9 years old and I still find it fun to teach them new things. They like it too, because it means one-on-one time with me. If there are good training classes near you, I wouldn't discount enrolling in a beginners obedience with the pup, as it will help you bond with her and she'll also get some extra socialization with other people and dogs (which is probably equally important to training manners).
