    Default7 Month old barking phase

My 7 month old pup is going through what i think its a barking phase. Shes always been a quiet pup but te last 2 weeks she wants to bark at everything and everyone. Not aggressively as shes wagging her tail so im sure its out of excitement or protecting me, But im having trouble getting her to stop. i try holding her mouth closed and saying "no bark".sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. if i just keep doing this will she grow out of it or is there anything else i can do? thanks!!

I'm having same problem with my 4 month old, she just barks constantly, and when she's having time out in her crate too.
I heard my neighbour scream out "shut up u mongrel" the other day. I was so peeved!
Especially since her dog barks through the night. Ours never barks in the middle of the night.

Just a quick question are your dogs left in doors or crated during the day when they are alone or outside by themselves?

This might sound crazy, but we taught Bauer to "speak" (which he did very well) and then "quiet." When he would start barking, I would tie the command "speak" to it, then tell him he was a good boy and treated him. It didn't take him very long to understand that "speak" meant "bark" and he was going to get a treat. When he had this down, I would tell him to speak, he would bark, and then I would quietly say, "quiet." As soon as he stopped, I would give him a treat. Repeat, repeat, repeat. He barks when he alerts me that someone is here, but he is quiet as soon as he is given that command.

Good point bauers mom. I've recall reading that in one of my lab training books at one time, teaching to speak and linking it with quiet. Before long they learn the quiet command.
