    Defaultdry,itchy, scabby skin and shedding

I have a 9 month old yellow lab.
She has dry, itchy scabs on her skin.
She's shedding so much that her coat is very thin and skin is showing...
I've been giving her a capsule of fish oil in the morning with her food.
    Anyone have advice for this?

Have you been to the vet to have this checked? What are you feeding? Have you checked for fleas? What about allergies?

Sorry for all the questions, obviously your dog can't be diagnosed via a dog forum but perhaps a little background would help in suggestions. To be honest though a vet visit would be my first step.

This is what happened with my chocolate last year when we had a flea problem - before I saw any fleas on him, he was scratching constantly and losing hair. Check for fleas.

Thank you. I hope no allergies but i just got her on different food. She's been on pedigree...
As for fleas, I treated her with flea ointment earlier this month, so yes she had fleas.
How long before the flea treatment kicks in?

What product did you use? Frontline is not so effective anymore on fleas/ticks.

You may need to treat your house and yard if you have a flea infestation.

Pedigree is not a quality food. I have found flea/tick products to be effective pretty quickly but as Sharon said if you have them in your home it may require additional treatment. Also, if you used Frontline or the generic equivalent it may not be working. It stopped working for my dogs several years ago. Check with your vet before applying a new product and you should not reapply more frequently than recommended. It definitely sounds like fleas are your issue.

Thank you for your advice! She was in the yard but I have her in the house so house is clean... I used the costco brand flea treatment. Has anyone had any success with this one?
Do I need a prescription from the vet?
Do they really lose that much hair with flea problems?

Also just read that adding apple cider vinegar to the pet's drinking water will help with the flea problem? Is this true?
I've never had this issue with other dogs I had...

I have never used anything but Frontline and what I am currently using - Vectra 3D for one and Advantix for the.other. I did know people that have bought flea control products from places like WalMart and they have not work. You don't need a script for these type of products. I would stop at the vets office or a pet supply store and get something different. The Vectra 3D I get at the vets and I have zero complaints with it. The fleas can absolutely cause the problems you have deoscribed. I have never heard of adding vinegar to the water but yuck! I would not want to drink that!
