We have had our new yellow lab for over a week. I understand that we are still very, very early in the housetraining, but he runs to the door to be let outside when he has to poop and relieves himself wherever he is in the house when he has to pee. I don't know if I am doing something wrong - I try to take him out after naps, play time, and at least every hour. Why does he know that he needs to go out to poop, but doesn't need to when he pees? Thanks for suggestions and help in advance!
because if he is still a baby (12 weeks and under) he probably doesn't even KNOW he has to pee. Babies have little to no control over their bladder. They can also be too distracted to realize they have to go and then it's too late.
make sure the puppy pees when you take them outside, and supervise in the house. If you cannot superivse (and I mean active supervision) then crate the puppy or tether him to you. Reward when he goes outside.

Thanks for your response Tanya. I will keep up what I have been doing - watching him closely in the house, taking him outside often, and praising him/rewarding him after going potty outside. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't doing anything wrong. It's my first lab puppy!
Also make sure you clean all areas where he has had an accident with an enzyme cleaner like Natures Miracle really well. Good luck!
