I have a 3 month old Lab puppy and want some advice on when I should start Obedience Training. My hubby and I have taught Rooney sit, down, shake, and currently working on stay. Thanks!
You can start now but it may take awhile i don't think there any officially an age limit when dog can get obedience training hopefully someone else can answer better. Also remember that some of it may not make sense to the dog right away.
We did our first group obedience class when Smokey was four and a half months, he did well, he learned quickly and he slept long and hard the nights after class! I always made sure to let him run and play at home before we wnet so some of his energy was worn off when we went, he was very excitable and loved the other dogs. We did another class after that one, basic obedience again mostly for the socialization and to really help him learn his commands. It is fun.
training at home starts day 1.
most obedience classes ask that pups be at least 6 months. mostly because an hour long class can be much too long before that (hard at 6 months too for some!).
but, your pup is at a great age for puppy classes. they are great for socialisation and some training in a new environment/distractions. classes generally allow some play breaks, some socialisation and training. a good one will also give tips on regular puppy problems people have.
Charlie (foster) and Rocky
Training here starts the day they come home, too. I haven't seen an actual age requirement for classes here, but they do require that the pup have at least it's 2nd set of vaccinations. Which would be at around 3 months old.
We started puppy class tonight and Chloe is 12 weeks
Thanks everyone! Rooney just got his 2nd round of shots and Vet said he could start a puppy class!
