Mo is only 5 months so I have no plans on taking him off the Fromm's large breed puppy food for a while but was wondering at what age do you start a pup on adult food? I have seen 12 months, 18 months, and 2 years. I am also waiting until he is 1 year old to have him neutered. Is that a good period of time to let his bones grow to maturity? Thanks so much for your help.
The 12mos, 18mos, 2 years (from what I have seen) has always been in relation to when to neuter. Typically breeders switch to adult food around 5-6mos of age. Also keep in mind the "large breed" formula is more so a gimmick than actually a requirement.
My vet had me switch foods at 6 months I believe.
Thanks. I did a google search and many recommended a year because of the nutrients in the puppy food that growing pups need. I did tell the husband that we were going to wait a year until we got Mo neutered because of all the wonderful advice and recommendations on here. I trust and value many of this forums comments. And if it helps Mo keep up with his bones growing needs and lessens problems in the future, I am all for it.
Be careful about feeding puppy food until he's 1yr. There are ingredients and amounts of said ingredients that puppies need more of in order to grow, etc. but if feed for too long may cause some issue. Hopefully others with more experience will chime in, sorry I can't really give you specifics about which ingredients, this is just the summary of what I have heard on here.
