Probably an anal gland problem. Some dogs need to have their anal glands expressed manually. Vets or groomers can do this. If you feed more fiber it may help eliminate the problem.

I agree with Sharon....a smelly back end is often the anal glads getting clogged up...

Seems a bit odd to me for a 5 month old to have this problem. What are you feeding him?

anal glands. smelling it does not always indicate there is a problem. sometimes when dogs clean themselves, you may smell it. sometimes if they get startled or scared, you will smell it.

At 5 months you should only be feeding twice a day and she really does not need puppy food anymore. Feeding multiple times a day matters when the puppy and her stomach are tiny and she was growing very rapidly. Bigger puppy, bigger tummy, can hold more food.

You can go to adult or all life stages food. The smaller meals you are currently feeding may cause smaller volume poops which could cause her anal gands to not get expressed. I'd make those changes and see if that clears it up. What are you feeding?
