DefaultAllowed in garden before 1st injection?

    Hello

I picked up my lab puppy (black, 6 weeks, Maggie) yesterday. I straight away booked her for her first injection which is for when she is 8 weeks.

I have been putting her outside in my garden to start the housetraining and so far she is doing really really well. Only 1 accident inside so far and weeing and pooing outside. But I have just read some puppy leaflets though and they say she shouldn't even be allowed in the garden before her first injection - what would you do? I really don't like the idea of training her to go on newspaper and then re-training her to go outside.

I only want to do what's best. She is my first puppy.

    Thanks in advance.

    Rachel

Since you booked her for her first inj., you obviously have a vet.
I would ask my vet. Seeing as how you haven't had any previous dogs, there shouldn't be any problems. Mostly worried about Parvo and other parasites.
My 12wk old has been confined to my backyard for 2 weeks now. She goes for her final shots tomorrow, but my vet still doesn't want her in contact with other dogs until 16 weeks.

Do other dogs frequent the garden? If not - you should be OK.

BTW - 6 weeks is a tad young and in the US the breeder has given 2 sets of shots before releasing at 8 weeks to a family.

Awe, another Maggie! This is my Maggie *points to photo below* She's gotten so big. She's at 22 pounds now...she was 5 when I found her at 6 weeks. Take pictures, they get big quick!

    Hi Rachel & Maggie,

My boy Harper has been allowed in our backyard since we picked him up at 8 weeks old. He's just had his 12 week shots, and the vet said we can take him outside, but to be cautious around dogs we don't know and to avoid poo for a little while. He'll get a "top up" catch at 16 weeks where we don't have to be AS vigilant.

Also, I agree with Sharon. Wonder why the breeder let her go so young without providing first shots?

Good luck and make sure you post some pics!
