I have a new 6 week old black lab puppy and he is having a hard time sleeping at night. He has a small crate that we put a blanket in for him to snuggle. He also has a toy he likes to snuggle with in there. I've put him in the kitchen and put a towel over his crate so it will be dark and help him know it's time for sleep. He whines and yelps and cries non-stop. I've heard that most puppies will cry for a couple hours and then fall asleep but Oakley doesn't. He also falls asleep during the day, which I'm sure is normal for a puppy. But every time he falls asleep on the floor, I move him to his crate so he knows that the crate is for sleeping. I'm not sure if it's normal for him to cry all night or if there is something I can do to help him get to sleep?
This might sound stupid but get a small wind up clock - the old fashioned type that you can hear ticking. If it's an alarm clock, FGS make sure the alarm isn't set! Wrap it in a towel & put it in the bed with him.
This is one of those old wives tales. I think I first heard it from my Grandmother but it works. The sound of the clock ticking is supposed to remind them of their mothers heart beat. I've done it with every pup I've ever had & it does help them settle down.
We will definitely give that a try! We've been throwing that idea around, so we'll give it a shot. Thanks!
