When my pup was constantly barking, a friend suggested a citronella-scented collar to help stop the barking. They said it worked wonders for their dog. I don't think it was the same collar, with the spray burst, but same principle. I never tried it since the barking stopped, but thought I'd throw it out there.
Personally, I do not like the citronella collars. The dog is punished long after it barks because the citronella is sprayed right in the dogs face and the scent lingers in the air and/or gets on their fur. Dogs really dislike citronella- that's why it's used. A dogs nose is the most powerful sense, so if you think about it, that's a pretty harsh punishment even though it supposed to be more humane.
Our hearing/noses can become desensitized to sound/smells - is this the same with dogs? It must be intolerable to be surrounded by a smell you really can't bear. As for those collars, they look like something from the Spanish Inquisition.
Ok thanks! I heard the prong works great i have used it before but not allot and couldn't tell a diff in their walk. Now we do got to remember it is a 11o pound rottie. She is very kind but like any other big dog she is powerful! The squirt thing doesn't look nice.
My 2 cents- besides what was already mentioned, another draw back to the citronella collar is that the cansister empties fairly quickly (according to a friend who used one). As for the prong- they're great when used properly. A couple of things to keep in mind:
#1- Only get a Herm Springer. There are a couple of other brands out there that are cheaper, both in price and quality.
#2- I don't like the big ones. I've found getting the one that is 14 inches and buying additional links works best.
#3- It's recommended that you don't "open and close" the collar at the same link every time because that link will eventually open on its own. That said, the only prong I've ever had open on it's own was the one I have with the "quick release". You have to be real careful to get the clasp closed properly on those. My old fashioned prong never opened on its own.
