DefaultMy puppy smells like dead fish.

Last night, our 16 week old puppy (Murphy) smelled a lot like dead fish.

I looked it up online, and some of the information I read recommended that we take him to either the vet or a groomer to have his anal glands expressed.

Has anyone ever done this with their dog? Also, is there something I can add to his diet (i.e. Fiber One cereal?) that will allow him to solve this problem without getting the vet or groomers involved?

    Thanks for your help.

Seems kind of young for needing his glands expressed. I've found that that smell arises when he gets into rabbit poop or something that he probably shouldn't have eaten. Anal glands always smelled more like an old wet tin can to me Of course right now i have a puppy who wants to be held and has the worst gas because he doesn't want to go out in the wind so what do i know? lol

Where exactly is the smell originating from? One thing you MAY want to double check is his mouth? When puppies begin the process of losing their teeth, they seem to get that bloody/fishy smell in their mouth, at least ours did. Still seems to at times, although I brush his teeth once a week.

what are you feeding your dog? A long time ago I tried eukanuba dog food and my dogs gave off a fishy smell.

The smell was coming from his rear end. It's no longer there today, but two nights ago, it was really, really bad.

The smell is of dead fish.

We are feeding him Purina Pro Plan puppy chicken and rice formula. He has been on it for nearly 8 weeks, and so far, so good.

We have a few rabbits that live in our back yard, so Murphy could definitely be getting his snout into rabbit poop. Never thought of that one - Thanks!
