My pup is three months old. She is great with the "leave it" command when I hold a treat right in front of her face. However, this doesn't work when I am outside with her on the leash. We aren't really walking that far just around the front yard.
I am basically pulling the leash so she doesn't get to rocks, bottlecaps or anything else that can hurt her digestive system. I read somewhere pulling on her can hurt or desensitize her neck muscles in the long run.
Anyone have any good suggestions?
for now pick up the junk she can eat and work on having her leash trained so she thinks leash walking is fun
also start teaching her leave it for things you place on the floor

Obedience class really helped me with that one. I can't remember, GoPOtty - are you in any obedience school? What our trainers did was make an obstacle course of various things... roll of toilet paper, bits of kibble, a hammer, a toy, etc... and we had to walk dog around area on leash, and have him 'learn' to leave those objects.
Every time you make her wait and 'leave' the item, reward her.
I want to sign her up for puppy kindergarten but my work schedule conflicts. I am commiting to regular obedience class since there are more classes available. Good point Brody she is still young and I am sure an instructor and facility can be more helpful in training a adolescent mind.
