Cody has a BIG MOUTH! (as well as being big everywhere else!) He has gotten used to us, the cat and the "house noises" - my mom lives in the flat upstairs and he ignores her walking about and coming and going. BUT he barks (and barks and barks) when there are any other noises - as visitors, neighbors moving about outside or the neighbor's dog in their yard. (The dog that he sees drives him crazy - the other neighbor's dog barks when we are out but he can't see her from our yard and ignores her)
His previous family left the dogs alone more than eight hours every day - he might have gotten in the habit of barking a lot then.
Thank you for any suggestions.

I'm so disappointed that this poster has received so little help. Is it any wonder they haven't posted much - I mean, what is the point?
I wish I knew too. I tell Toby NO when he barks for no reason and I repeat it over and over. I also try and give him a toy to get his mind on something besides barking.
Thank you for the help - we are working on "quiet" and giving him one of the few toys he is allowed to have freely. (My Chesapeake was not a big chewer and I am also having trouble finding appropriate "chewies" for him)
When we notice an "opportunity" for too much barking developing we are doing a mini obedience practice. Generally working on one command he is good at so it is all positive.
Again thanks to those that responded.
