    QuestionGarbage picking!

Hi... I have a problem and was hoping some of you would have a suggestion on how to fix it. I have a 3 1/2 year old chocholate/pointer mix. And for the past couple of months he has been getting into the kitchen and bathroom garbage cans. And when he does he makes a HUGE mess that i have to clean up. I have started to put the kitchen garbage can in the bathroom and close the door when i leave the house. Well just recently he started to jump up and pull things off the kitchen counter, and my night stand.(He has even chewed up pop cans). I am at a complet lose and what to do to keep him from doing this. Any ideas???
    Thanks

Put him in a crate when you are not home. He is not trustworthy.

you say this is a new behavior - has there been any change in routine around the time it started (anything, including change in exercise schedual).

SOMETIMES exercise helps (uping exercise particularly in the morning but overall as well). BUT that is rarely the cure. I kept going back to crating my dog when he acted up like that, but alternatively a dog proof room would work (rather than complete freedom).

there is not a whole lot you can do to stop behavior that happens when you are gone other than crating/proper dog proofing.

You pretty much have the answers. You either have to dog proof thehouse, or restrain his freedom. If you have a crate, you may try that for a month and let him try freedom again. I went through this with Hershey Kisses. She would be great for 2-4 days and then back at it. It took 6 months in and out of the crate for her to figure it out. Now she has full freedom for almost 3 years.
