Just curious on opinions for what age to train/use stairs with for a lab puppy?

I understand most labs grow differently but in terms of joints, elbows and such I wonder when would be good to introduce them. Nothing extreme just standard basement and deck stairs. And should they be used in moderation?

Moka is 10 weeks right now and he has crawled up the deck stairs (5) a few times when he is tired of the cold on his little paws. I did not notice it 2 times but I did not stop it the one time I did see him, he took it very slow and one at a time seemingly cautious. Just wanted to make sure we don't allow something that could cause future problems for him.

I would not allow him to do stairs at all at his age. I would carry him in and out for at least another 2 months.

I know it is really cold out (certainly it is here in NJ) but he should not be outdoors without you being in close supervision of him.

He is not out without any supervison. Cleaning up the poop requires to take your eyes off him for a few seconds and that is all he needs. Again he has only done this 3 times I have noticed in 3 weeks so far. I will and do continue to carry him up and down to the basement.

Do you have any info on why not to use the stairs? just curious.

It's bad for his joints to climb up and down stairs too young. Simply.

I agree that 10 weeks is too early to be going up and down stairs but I thinking jumping up and down off furniture is far worse for a pup and lots of people allow that.

Not sure of the age they can begin to climb safetly....I didn't have to worrry about it since my pups just stay on the first floor. I will say that when I finally did encounter stairs at a shopping center my almost 5 month old froze and would not even attempt to climb them.....so....don't wait that long!!
