DefaultA Poem for All the Beautiful Friends We've Lost

When we lost Winston 1 month ago today to Degenerative Myelopathy, I was overcome with grief so intense I thought it would literally shred my soul to pieces. The night after we put him to sleep, I was online looking up info on this terrible disease, to see if there was any research I could contribute to in Winston's memory. I found this poem on a website for a German Shepherd that succumbed to the same tragic disease, and it helps me get through the days without my precious, beautiful baby boy. I wanted to share it with all of you who have also suffered the anguish of losing a Lab:

    Last Night

I stood by your bed last night, I came to have a peep.
I could see that you were crying, You found it hard to sleep.
I whined to you softly as you brushed away a tear,
    "It's me, I haven't left you, I'm well, I'm fine, I'm here."
I was close to you at breakfast, I watched you pour the tea,
You were thinking of the many times, your hands reached down to me.
I was with you at the shops today, Your arms were getting sore.
I longed to take your parcels, I wish I could do more.
I was with you at my grave today, You tend it with such care.
I want to re-assure you, that I'm not lying there.
I walked with you towards the house, as you fumbled for your key.
I gently put my paw on you, I smiled and said " it's me."
You looked so very tired, and sank into a chair.
I tried so hard to let you know, that I was standing there.
It's possible for me, to be so near you everyday.
To say to you with certainty, "I never went away."
You sat there very quietly, then smiled, I think you knew...
in the stillness of that evening, I was very close to you.
The day is over... I smile and watch you yawning
and say "good-night, God bless, I'll see you in the morning."
And when the time is right for you to cross the brief divide,
I'll rush across to greet you and we'll stand, side by side.
I have so many things to show you, there is so much for you to see.
Be patient, live your journey out...then come home to be with me.

I know my Winston lies beside me as I type this, his gorgeous yellow head resting on my lap. I pray for the day I've been promised, when tears will finally be replaced by joyful memories.

I figure we could all use some "Chicken Soup for the Lab Lovers Soul."

    Love You, Winnie Boy :'(

That is such a great poem....so much truth. I know Annie is with me all day long. She was as much my soulmate as a dog and human can be with each other.

I keep thinking the pain will get less intense, but it doesn't. The episodes of pain just get less frequent. She is in my thoughts and heart ALL THE TIME!! Having Sally has helped, but in a way, it only makes me think of Annie more.

I love you, Annie Fannie. And please know I'm sorry for all you had to suffer in your short life.

Thank you for posting that and sharing. It gives me some comfort from this terrible aching in my heart.

Thank you for that. It was beautiful and made my cry - by realizing how much we love our dogs and how much they return that love.
    God bless.

That is such a great poem. It really did make me cry, but brought a smile to my face as I thought about how faithful my two boys were.

That is a wonderful poem. I am going to send it to a friend who just lost her lab on July 1st. He was only 11 1/2 and one month younger than my oldest yellow boy. I think it will give her some comfort so than you for posting it.

    Hello!

I'm so glad that this poem has given so many of you some comfort in a time of incredible grief. I'm also thrilled that the poem has been read as many times as it has! I hoped it would help those of you suffering the loss of your Labs, and I'm content that it has helped so many.

There is no greater joy than being a parent, be that a human's parent or a pet parent. As a mom to both a 3.5 year old human baby girl, and a 13 week old furry Springer Spaniel, the attachment to both of my children is overwhelming and all-encompassing.

I wish you all continued comfort in your moment of loss. Winnie has been gone for 6 months now, but the sparkle in his big brown eyes remains in my memory forever. I'm convinced he sent me Seymore, my new puppy, as he was tired of watching mommie cry each night for his furry little ears and warm, inviting fur.

    God Bless you all,

Dagmara, Michael, Gracie, Seymore (in all his puppy cuteness!) & Winnie, resting in heaven and finally free from pain. :-[
