A friend recently had to put her poodle down, and in her grief she found some solace in a letter her vet's office sent to her containing a magnificent poem that I thought I should share with other dog lovers.
The Last Battle
If it should be I grow frail and weak,
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then will you do what must be done,
For this - the last battle - can't be won.
You'll be sad I understand,
But don't let grief stay your hand,
For on this day, more than the rest,
Your love and friendship must stand the test.
We've had so many happy years,
You wouldn't want me to suffer so.
When the time comes, please let me go.
Take me to where my needs they'll tend,
Only, stay with me until the end
And hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see.
In time, I know you will agree
It was kindness that you showed to me.
Although my tail its last was waved,
From pain and suffering I've been saved.
Dont grieve that it must be you
Who has to decide this thing to do;
We've been close - we two- these years,
Dont let your heart hold any tears.

Oh Gosh! I'm at a birthday party and I just read it and my eyes are full of tears.
Thank you for sharing.
If dogs do not go to heaven, then I prefer to follow them where they go.
Oh wow, that really brought tears to my eyes. It has been more than a year that we had to put Dave down and I still have nightmares about our decision. I kind of know we did the right thing, he was in so much pain, but I miss him so much and sometimes it feels like I failed him. Sorry, didn't mean to make this all about me
Thank you for sharing.

That was beautiful.....a friend is putting her dog down tomorrow, I think I will share this poem with her. THank You!
Missing you every day Summer
oh wow, that poem is good. I remember the torment we went through when it came to saying goodbye to our Carin, we were totally devestated that she was failing so quick after being such a vibrant girl. However, I know that what we did was a final act of kindness from us, to her, to say thank you for all the wonderful years we shared.
