    DefaultComputer issues with Rebel XTi

I am having trouble downloading my pictures to the computer. I connect the cable and turn on the camera and the computer makes the noise that something new is connected but the little window that says that never pops up. When I try to open the EOS utility software it opens and immediately closes. If the computer is not connected it will open but then when I turn on the camera it closes. I have also tried with Photoshop and it can't find the camera. Do you think the problem is with the computer, the cable or the camera?

    1) Buy a CF card reader... They are cheap and can be purchased anywhere.
    2) If possible, try connecting to another computer or notebook.
    3) Check the knowledgeBase
    4) Make sure that Windows XP is up to date with service pack 2
    5) Reinstall DPP
    6) Make sure your camera has the latest firmware loaded 1.1.1

Thank you so much for your suggestions. I downloaded the service pack last night and still no luck. I am looking around in knowledge base and have a couple more things to try. I think part of the problem is that the first time I connected the camera to the computer I hadn't installed the software. I was able to download pictures that time through our kodak software somehow. I will try again this weekend.

In the tool menu, did you set the "Communication" to PC Connect?

Yes. I have the Rebel XT not XTi, but I imagine it is similar. The first time I connected to the computer, I had to change the Communication setting from "Print" to "PC Connect". On the XT It is in the second set of tool options on the LCD when you push the menu button. The menu list has on the XT has a setting called "Communication" and it needs to be changed to "PC Connect" in order for your computer to recognize it.

I would read the chapter on transferring images (Direct Transfer) from your camera to computer on page 107 in your manual. If you don't have it, then you can download it from here.

Okay, I followed page 107 and still nothing, I removed and reloaded the software and nothing, so I gave up and downloaded the software to my laptop and success. Now I just need to figure out how to see the laptop from the main computer because there is not a lot of room to save the pictures on the laptop. So from everything I have read the issue seems to be that I was too stupid to read everything first and connected the camera to the computer before installing the software I have emailed a question to Canon to see if there is away around this). Thanks to all for the attempts to help me.
