    DefaultCamera Shopping..... SLR question

Ok, I LOVE my Sony H5 but have had trouble with the auto focus. Then last week my shutter button popped off and is now being held on my a peice of tape. :

I am very casually looking at cameras. I may purchase a new one around Christmas when things are on sale.

Is there such a thing with an dSLR camera that has a screen on the back that you can use to take pictures?? (I know all you photographers out there frown on this but that is the way I like to do it!)

That feature is called "Live View"... The new $5000 Canon 1d Mark III, Olympus' E-410, E-510 and E-330 all have it.

The E-510 looks like a great camera. It has a Live View display, built-in image stabilization and is very reasonably priced.

I'm not even going to look up the $5000 one!

I did however look at the E-510 and actually it is just what I am looking for plus not TOO expensive! SLR still scares me though. I don't understand all those lenses and stuff. Do you think this is one I can take right out of the box and use on auto and get good results? Or do you have to have some sort of working knowlege of those lenses right off the bat to use the camera? (Are the various lenses something I can slowly work up to?)

Amazons price at $1000 you get the camera along with 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 and 40-150mm f/4.0-5.6 Zuiko Lenses. I don't have a clue what those lenses are for. I guess I need to do some more reading! I'm trying to hold off until Christmas time so I have a while to read up I guess! Thanks for putting up with my dumb questions!

Thanks also for telling me about the E-510!

Those lenses are entry level but from what I read about them are pretty good especially outdoors and retail for around 250 bucks each. You may need to buy an external flash if you plan on shooting indoors.

You'll find some good info on the E-510 at DPreview's Oympus SLR forum... I lurked on DPreview's SLR forums for several months before I finally took the plunge and bought my Canon 30d.

Thanks for the link! I'll definitely check that out this weekend!

I live in a small town with no big electronics retailers or camera shops so I think I'll to go to Birmingham (about an hour from me) at some point to actually put my hands on this camera. It always helps to see them in person too!

I have just entered the market for a new camera and plan on going the Digitial SLR route.

The cameras I am currently considering are
    Pentax K10D
    Pentax K100D
    Nikon D40X
    Nikon D40
    Canon XTi
    Canon XT

I will probably go with one of the two 10 MPixel cameras, however the Canon 8 MPixel is really tempting.

I just got the new Canon EOS 40D. It has live view. Good luck deciding on a camera.

    buddysmom,

So I decided on a camera, and then I see your siggy pic which I have seen before. I am now trying to pic a camera again. I want a camera that can take that picture.

Pretty sure that I am going with the Pentax K10D. I have just about everything picked out, EXCEPT THE LENSES. Small problem?

That picture was taken with the Canon EOS Rebel XT. It is a great camera. It's also fairly cheap right now. Personally, if you're looking for a DSLR, I'd stay with Canon or Nikon. I'm partial to Canon.

Ummmm yes... :P The K10d is seems to be a great camera based on the reviews I've read, and has built-in image stabilization and a weather sealed body. If you don't have any lenses, get the body with the 18-55 kit lens.
