I'll start. Maybe this will give some of you an idea of just what is needed in this assignment.

Buddy - Shallow DOF - Blurred background. You can't make out any of the background.
    ISO 400
    SS 1/2000
    AV f/1.8
    50mm f1.8 lens

Buddy - Broad DOF - The background is in focus. You can make out the different shrubs.
    ISO 400
    SS 1/25
    AV f/16
    50mm f1.8 lens

Notice in the first picture, I have a large aperture (small number - f/1.8 ) and a fast SS of 1/2000 sec. This combination will give a shallow DOF. In the second picture, I have a small aperture (larger number -f/16) and a slower SS of 1/25 sec. This will give a broad DOF.

Okay...here goes. I am still stuck in the house & I really want to use photos of the girls, so here are my two. I really could not get more blur in front on her.

I used my Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM lens.

    Canon Rebel XT
    SS - 1/100
    f/8
    ISO - 200
    Focal length - 50mm
    Broad DOF

    'Molly"

    SS - 1/60
    f/1.6
    ISO - 200
    Focal length - 50mm
    Narrow DOF

    "Molly"

Due to the weather, I had to shoot inside. I picked this location to see how much detail I could get in the background. This is much harder inside without a flash.
    Broad DOF
    Canon Rebel XT
    lens: 1.8 50 mm
    Shutter speed: 1/40
    F/8
    focal length 50 mm
    ISO: 800
    No flash

    Narrow DOF
    Rebel XT
    lens: 1.8 50 mm
    shutter speed: 1/250
    F/2
    ISO: 400
    focal length: 50 mm
    no flash

    P&S
    Macro
    ISO 60
    Sharpness soft
    f/4.4
    SS 1/125
    FL 15.7MM

    P&S
    Landscape
    ISO 60
    Sharpness normal
    f/5.6
    SS 1/200
    FL 6mm

I shot both of these in the same spot but by the time I changed my settings Ginger moved.
I did the best I could with my P&S camera and the limited adjustments I can make, not to mention a dog that won't stay still.

I think this is the best that I can do. Was I suppose to be adjusting the distance too? I just played with shutter speed and aperture.
Nikon D40 Manual Mode for both. Did not realize that I had changed from 24mm to 26. Biggest problem was trying to get the aperture on my camera to go lower.

Modified to tell which is narrow and which is broad. Sorry. I KNOW it is hard to tell. Look at the dragonfly in the plant in the back. I had some really nice ones for narrow DOF with a basket in the front instead of the plant, but never could get the broad DOF to look any better than the narrow!!

    narrow DOF
    1/60
    F5
    24 mm

    broad DOF
    1/40
    f4
    26 mm

I had to use portrait and landscape modes to take my pictures, because my camera doesn't have the necessary adjustments for this assignment. I know that portrait mode is a little blurry as well, but as i have said it's my camera :-\. Also, I think raian and buddysmom already know, that my camera only allows a slight difference in the blurriness of the background in portrait mode- just to let the critiques know.

    Portrait setting (Shallow DOF)
    Make: FUJIFILM FINEPIX E550
    ISO: 200
    SS Value: 3.600
    Aperture Value: 3.500

    Landscape setting (Broad DOF)
    ISO: 200
    SS Value: 3.200
    Aperture Value: 3.500

This is the last leaf of the year ... holding on for dear life!!! ;D Unfortunately, when I use the zoom lens, my min/max aperture range is 3.5 to 8.0. It doesn't allow for a lot of difference, but at least it is noticeable. :-\ Either way, this is a huge accomplishment, because I didn't even know what aperture WAS 4 weeks ago. Thanks, guys!
