    DefaultAssignment #1

DO NOT POST YOUR PHOTOS TO THIS THREAD
Please do not ask questions in this thread. (use the question thread for questions)

To see where you are with your skills, we would like each of you to take your VERY BEST photo of your dog. You can set the dog up for a portrait or do an action shot... any shot of your dog is fine for this assignment. We want to see what you think is the best composition and exposure of your dog. We aren't giving you any help or hints on this one, it's an assignment to see what you know (or don't know) about taking a photo. Also please tell us what type of camera you are using, and what settings you used to take the photo.

We ask that you post ONE photo in the ASSIGNMENT #1 PHOTOS thread (it will be opened in a few days). And we ask that you DO NOT COMMENT OR REPLY to any posts in that thread as it will get very confusing really fast for the instructors who will be critiquing your work. Take your Best Shot. Post it. Do not make any comments or replies in the thread.

Please do not submit an old picture. Shoot your assignment the week it is due. We want you to be out there with your camera taking pictures, not just rehashing your old stuff.

DO NOT CROP OR ALTER YOUR PHOTOS for this class. You are trying to learn to take a good picture right out of the camera, not by using photo shop magic Wink

Assignment #1 will be due next Tuesday by noon EST. That's January 23. This will give you the rest of this week and a weekend. The class instructors will then critique your photo and hopefully be able to give you some sound advice on where you can improve.

What if you can't find your camera and you only have old shots to use?

    I have a question.
    What's a dSLR and what's a point and shoot?

    See, I'm really clueless. :-\

A dSLR is a digital Single Lens Reflux camera. They are the cameras that you can change the lens on. Canon Rebel, Rebel XT, Rebel XTi, D30, D5 and Nikon D40, D50, D70, D80, D200 just to name a few are dSLRs. Most digital cameras that people buy now a days are P&S ( point and shoot) cameras. They don't have interchangable lens and usually have an optical zoom of some power on them. This optical zoom supposedly replace the need to change lenses. Hope this helps.

Trickster, get to looking for that camera. If you can't find it in the next week, we'll see about letting you post an old picture.

Also, the lens and mirror in a DSLR is configured in such a way that the image you see in the viewfinder is the actual image that you will capture in memory.

Thank you for clearly explaining the difference!

I definitely have a point and shoot.

Also, the majority of Point and Shoot cameras have terrible shutter lag that makes it nearly impossible to capture action shots (unless you are psychic). dSLR's have a shutter that releases immediately when you click the button and you can capture great action

I may try to take shots with my Digital and my film. I have noticed that my Olympus Film camera takes WAY better shots than my digital. The problem is waiting for the development.
