Ruger had his eye surgery this morning. The ulcer on the left eye was pretty much as we had seen it stained, about 3mm size. However, the one on the right eye was the size of a DIME!!! I about freaked out as I thought he was doing so well on the right eye. Vet was surprised as well at how big it was (it went upwards on his eye so when we looked at it after staining just using a flashlight at home, we couldn't see how extensive it was.)
She debrided them and did the keratotomy procedure and then inserted contacts on his eyes. The contacts will stay in for fourteen days. She called me and told me he was already getting relief from the contacts and was a LOT more comfortable, so I hope this is the trick and that they will now heal.
He does not have Entropian (eyelashes ingrown). There is no reason the vet can see why this is happening. She did tell me that dogs that have these types of ulcers almost ALWAYS get them in both eyes, and from what she's researched it's an actual problem with the dog's epithelial cells, but this surgery usually does the trick, although she did warn me that sometimes the procedure must be repeated. Keeping our fingers and paws crossed that we will heal this time!
We continue to treat with the Cipro antibiotic drops as often as I can put them in his eyes.
My vet is bringing him home when she's done with work tonight. (She's a sweetie to deliver him for me... she doesn't live too far away from me and is also one of my students -- agility student that is).
Anyway, I'm glad it's over and done and hopefully the next couple of weeks will pass quickly and we will see great improvements. He will miss the CPE Agility trial Nov 7-8. Oh well. His eyes are more important.
Total cost -- $417.00 (the contacts were the most expensive thing, costing $100)
I can't wait to hug my bug when I get home from work tonight!!!
Praying for everything to heal up quickly and NOT COME BACK!. Actually, the price doesn't sound too bad compared to what things normally are.
Sure hope things go uneventful from here on out. I'll continue praying that his eyes will heal.

Wow, I guess my vet is very reasonable.
AND, when she took Ruger to my house, my mom was there, and she (the Vet) gave mom 2 packages of heartworm pills for my dogs and she apologized and said, "Linda paid so fast, she didn't get her "friend" discount" so I brought these out for her."
Is my vet SWEET or what I love her!!!
That's pretty much what I would ballpark something at my vet's- regular appts cost me 400 dollars!Originally Posted by conrad

Wow Linda that isn't bad! Glad he's doing better and will continue to remember him. Give that sweet yellow boy a huge and kiss from me.
