    DefaultUtility A Report for Shamrock

I told my husband I would post a report for his weekend showing. We were at the same trial as Susan and Caleb. On Saturday, Shamrock missed the second article but everything else was good. I don't have the breakdown but for the NQ in Articles his score was 191. Sunday - Shamrock was on. Got both articles and I was holding my breath until the last finish on the last go-out and hurray - a second leg. Score 189. He didn't sit on the halt when healing which I couldn't see from where I had to watch in hiding, but Terry said he knew he didn't sit so minus 3 points there. I am proud of both of them - they've worked so hard and maybe its all coming together. So just one more leg to go.
Friday I showed both pups in Rally. My 11 1/2 year old scored 97 in both Excellent B and Advanced B and now has 2 legs for his RAE2 and Shamrock finished his RA with a 95. I almost never check why we lose points because my promise to myself was to keep this fun and not obsess about the scores but I decided to see where Shamrock lost points. Much to my surprise - we lost 3 points on the Call Front, Finish Right exercise. The judge, Adele Yunck. said as soon as Shamrock was out of my way, I should have started moving to the next station and not waited for him to get all the way around me. Guess my interpretation of the sign was a little different but this is an easy mistake to correct. Wonder if that's how I lost the same three points with Doro? Bummer.
The show was the Luck of the Irish - perfect for a lab named Shamrock.

Yes...that is correct. Step out as soon as the dog starts moving. In fact that point has been drilled at many of the recent judging seminars so if you haven't seen a crack down on it already, you will now.

I have a friend who shows 2 sometimes 3 of her dogs in rally. I can't tell you how many times I've watched her make the same mistake with all 3 dogs (not necessarily the one you mentioned but repeating mistakes with each dog). I have on occassion pointed things out to her so she has an opportunity to fix it with the other 2 dogs but that first dog (no matter which one it is) always takes the brunt of the point hits. She ends up with scores of 89, 99, and 100 or something like that.

Linda - Would that I could but I am only the spouse observer so clearly not the expert. While I love my husband dearly, he tends to ignore my offers of advice regarding Utility. I know you have worked hard so that cannot be it. Terry has relaxed to some extent and I do think that has helped him and Shamrock now seems to be enjoying himself. Of our two labs though - he is the most easy going. I didn't think he ever got stressed until one day when I was showing him in Agility and the light went on for me that he was a little nervous. Terry has started allowing Shamrock a stress buster between exercises so maybe that has helped some. I'm not sure how old your Utility pup is but Shamrock will be 7 in June so I think that has helped too. I can only sympathize with the disappointment Utility competitors experience and I know that it will all click eventually so keep trying.

Lydia - You are right about the Rally judges cracking down. Saturday at the Trial I was talking briefly with Linda MacDonald who was on the AKC Committee that "designed" Rally. She indicated that the original goal of making Rally kind of fun and loose was getting wiped out by competitors asking for more exact definitions of how to do the exercises. Once the exercise performance requirements were tightened up, gave less leeway to exhibitors to perform with a loser standard if you will. I am sure I am not unlike your friend only sometimes its the difference between Advanced and Excellent. The first time we ever saw Offset Figure 8 in an Excellent Class our score was 76 or something. A hour later, we did the Advanced Course with the same Offset Figure 8 in the same place in the ring and scored 100. I thought that was kind of peculiar but decided not to question my luck. I do think the Rally judges have become stricter about performance since Rally was first introduced.

Yes, the compeition has arrived in Rally!!!! I still use it as a place to build Caleb's ring attitude. I know Linda has mentioned that everyone is getting too serious--suppose to be fun and be a place to work "green" dogs. But, those of us who had dogs all ready competiting have gone into the Rally ring. But, like I said, I use it to build Caleb's attitude. Linda thought that was a pretty good idea!
