I was so encouraged this morning. We got to the show. I practiced out in the field with him on pivots for gloves, go outs, hand signals and he was ON ON ON. As soon as we entered the ring, the light went off and nobody was home.
He did SQUAT. He did the heeling but wouldn't down. He wouldn't even go out for the scent articles. He did go out for the glove, but half heartedly and he made a wide turn (from one to two) to bring me back a wrong one. Stand for exam he did. Go outs. Forget it. He wouldn't go at all.. maybe three feet from me. I so wanted to take him by the collar and run him out there. Arrrrgggghhhh.
Driving home I kept going over in my mind WHY. I don't know if I'm looking for excuses or not, but honestly, this is the third time I've showed under this judge and each time Ruger has refused to work for me. I'm beginning to think it's something with the judge. Or am I just reaching for straws here???
Oh well, it was a nice drive for a Sunday afternoon
Oh Linda! I'm sorry this didn't go well at all for you. I think you might be on to something about the judge though. Unless he does it a lot under different judges, there might be something about this judge. You might never know what - but I think at this point I just wouldn't show under that judge. Hope things go better next time. It sounds like it's certainly "something" about being in the ring.
WOW! Could be! Who was the judge?
UCDX GRCH Dunn's Marsh Caleb of Waltona UDX3, OM3, RAE Canadian UD, RE
FallRiver's Micah of Waltona GN RAE, Canadian CD, RN
Sorry, you had no luck. It's interesting about the judge. She might be on a medication or have some health condition or something like that and it could possibly made Ruger apprehensive. Dogs sense so much more than we can even image.
What a bummer!! Hope you can figure him out. Hang in there Linda.

Well shucks! Does Ruger show any reaction when the judge is near? Do you see the judge often? Could you 'discretely' practice signals for example near the judge while he/she is not in the ring? (If you are not competing that day under him/her)
Sorry to hear about the NQ. When is your next show?
Awww...I was hoping for better news today. I'm sorry it didn't go as well as yesterday. It could be the judge but really Utility is so hard it could be anything...distractions, where the judge stands or his mannerisms, loudspeaker going, a dog that growled at Ruger on the way into the ring...anything that could cause the dog to lose confidence.
