Well, with Hilton Head fast approaching I figured I'd better set up my gating and start working Ruger. WOW, he was perfect today. I mean absolutely perfect. Sometimes it amazes me I can do nothing with him for almost a month (haven't worked him since our show the last weekend in January) and he does so well.
I have a new way to motivate him in the ring. After our exercises I tell him, "Who's the man? Ru's the man!" and he gets so excited he runs around in a circle and barks. Now, at a show I know he won't be that animated, but I'm hoping it will excite him enough to maintain his focus.
That has been our hardest thing. The longer we are in the ring, the more he fades and his confidence goes right down the toilet. So keeping him up and happy and excited is paramount to a better performance.
WHO'S DA MAN? RU'S DA MAN!!!!
That's too cute!!!! I know after Christmas break, Caleb worked really well. Sometimes a little time off does seem to do them good.
GGGGOOOOOOOOO RUGER! RAH RAH RU!
Yep Ru's the Man. ;D
You are on the right track with Ruger. Attitude really is everything in utility. I worked on nothing but Murray's attitude for several months and it's paying off now. I get so many compliments from judges and other competitors that Murray is a joy to watch in the ring because he is always so happy. I have another UA friend who is now working on her dog's attitude after 1 year in UA without any Qs (the dog stresses so much she shuts down...can't even move). It's really hard for my friend because her trainer was very hard nosed...absolutely no playing around in the ring, obedience is serious business. : Everything was very regimented. My friend has trained with the woman for many years so now several of us are working to "untrain" her so she will loosen up and have fun.
Tell me about the attitude! Been working so hard on the SFX/MS that today at class Caleb actually growled (yes growled!) at Linda when she whent to examine him. So, we're backing off on things to get attitude back.
Thanks for the encouragement. For me, it is attitude. I want Ruger to enjoy this. That matters to me the MOST. Okay, okay, I'd be a liar if I said I didn't care about the title, because I DO care about it or I wouldn't keep at this. I know he can get a UD. He's a UD dog at home and most times in practice at parks. So we keep the boy happy and we have fun and we keep our hopes up that it will happen for us at some point
and it will!! ;Dwe keep our hopes up that it will happen for us at some point
