    Defaultdebate between SU and me

Here's the debate: I walk Gabby twice a day, but it's always on the flexi leash. She runs around and sniffs- it gets her more tired than otherwise. When we do anything related to training or go to situations where she needs to heel, it's on our 6 foot leather leash.

He feels that I'm confusing her by walking her and not making her heel. I don't feel this way because I always differentiate leashes.

    Opinions?

Nope...nothing wrong with what you are doing just use different words for heeling vs. walking. For example, "free" for allowing her to explore and "heel" when she needs to be close. The only time Murray and Essy are required to heel is when we are training or competing or when I need to collect them to walk thru a crowd or cross a street. When we are just out on a casual walk, as long as they aren't pulling, they are free to explore as they please.

Gabby's mom - I think what you are doing is AOK. You want your pup to walk nicely with you or ahead if you let her move around with a flexi - and she can't be heeling all of the time. I don't use a flexi because I am not co-ordinated enough but I walk two labs at the same time with a leash that allows both of them room to walk - not heel - and it works great. I agree with Lydia - Heel is only for training, showing and in situations where attention is needed.

There are places where I walk Caleb on the flexi. He knows the difference.

I agree, dogs are smart enough to know the difference between leashes and collars. You are just fine.

That is so true! Caleb knows the difference between the collar and lead for the breed ring and the obedience ring. That is one of the reasons we can literally go from one ring to the other and do well in each.
