    DefaultWhat is your dog's personality

    There has been some discussion about "drive" on another board I frequent, specifically what makes a good obedience dog.* Someone posted a link to the Volhard Canine Personality Profile.* It rates prey and pack drive as well as defense - fight or flight.*

    http://www.volhard.com/training/cpp.htm

    I thought the results for my dogs were very interesting.

    * * * * * * * * * * * * Murray* * * Essy
    Prey* * * * * * * * * * 40* * * * * *20
    Pack* * * * * * * * * * 60* * * * * *80
    Defense - Fight* * *40* * * * * 10
    Defense - Flight* * * 5* * * * * 15

    - Murray is almost 50/50 for prey/pack drive and he is more likely to fight then run away. I was actually expecting his prey drive to be higher than his pack drive so that is interesting.

    - Essy is very pack driven and she will run (or hide behind me or Murray : ) before fighting.

    I’ve always thought that Murray has more “drive” and a better work ethic then Essy but couldn’t pin point why. It took me awhile to learn how to motivate Essy.* She didn't chase toys and wasn't particularly food motivated.* What she wants more than anything is my attention. Murray will work until his legs fall off...loves to work. Essy can take it or leave it sometimes. She wants to please but when she's done, she's done. Murray is ball crazy and will fetch for hours. I have to make him stop and rest. When Essy is tired, she will take the ball and go lay down.* So it must be the prey drive that I like in Murray since that seems to be lowest in Essy although I’ve always thought of prey drive as being bad (chasing cars, cats, etc).*

    It gives me something to think about anyway.

    How do your dogs rate on this test?

    Hudler
    Prey = 15
    Pack = 55
    Defense - Fight = 40
    Defense - Flight = 15

    Maddy
    Prey = 25
    Pack = 35
    Defense - Fight = 10
    Defense - Flight = 5

    Grace
    Prey = 30
    Pack = 60
    Defense - Fight = 25
    Defense - Flight = 20

    This is kind of interesting. I have to read it to be able to interpret it better.

    I'm going to do it in a minute. My guess is that Scotty's pack and flight instincts will be significantly higher than prey and fight.

    Jake was

    Prey = 55
    Pack = 75
    Defense - Fight = 30
    Defense - Flight = 20

    Honestly I thought his fight would be higher with the food guarding issues I've had - but this just cements for me that he does have the "fear" described in the resource guarding books I've read and not the aggression (no other problems). Not at all surprised his pack is so high, he follows me everywhere - but when I'm not there, he's very much an independent dog ??? and likes to be the boss.

    He's motivated most by food and play (loves loves loves tug of war) but will also work for affection - does that explain the two high scores?

    Very interesting!

    Interesting test.

    Ruger got the following results - Prey = 45. Pack = 60. Fight = 45. Flight = 5.

    Magnum got the following results - Prey = 65. Pack = 40. Fight = 20. Flight = 40.

    I would have thought Magnum had a higher pack drive as she's definitely Alpha Bitch. I was surprised Ruger scored so high on the Fight drive. He would never fight another dog, he's a big wuss. But he's a struggle to groom and handle physically, he will fight me and he's strong

    Scotty:

    Prey = 40
    Pack = 75
    Defense - Fight = 30
    Defense - Flight = 10

    I'm surprised on fight/flight.

    VERY interesting! I think this will help illustrate what I have to put up with :

    Prey Pack Fight Flight
    Angus 70 65 50 20
    Simon 70 70 35 30

    I really thought Simon's prey drive would be lots higher than Angus'. He is a huge stalker of other small animals. You should see...he goes into this thing that almost looks like a Border Collie. : Also surprising is that their pack drive scores are so similar. Maybe because they are so similar is the reason there is so much competition and jealousy.

    Funny that their scores can be so close, but on individual questions there seemed to be more difference. I guess they have a lot of the same basic tendencies, but they manifest in different ways.

    Also interesting was what they said at the end about dogs with a high pack drive and low prey drive needing very little training. I haven't taken it for Crash, but I'm betting that's how he would score. He was so little trouble, his whole life. He didn't ever really have any behaviors that needed correcting.
