I'm quite sure that with this question I am outing myself as a complete newbie-to-the-world-of-"real"-obedience!
How many Novice obedience exercises are there, and what are they? Inquiring minds want to know.*
(PS. I'm starting to look for a training school for Henery! EEEEEEEE!!!!* )
All of us started at the same place you are.* ;D
There are 7 Novice exercises (5 individuals and 2 groups).* In order, they are:
heel on lead
stand for exam (off lead)
heel off lead
long sits (1 min)
long downs (3 min)
Check out the link on this website for articles on each level obedience written by a well know obedience judge. I review these articles every time I'm getting ready to go into the ring. They discuss how to do the exercises and where points are lost.
Page down about 1/2 - 3/4 page under the heading"Articles on the Application of the AKC Obedience Regulations"
Good Luck! It may not be the fast paced excitement of agility but I love it. It's a good time to bond with your dog.
Hey, ya gotta ask sometime! :P Congratulations! This will be fun!

Thanks Lydia! Great link!! ;D
The obedience magazine, Front and Finish www.frontandfinish.com has a list of schools. Those found there should be more competition oriented. Also, check the National Association of Dog Obedience Instructors www.nadoi.org. Look for someone who has titled an advanced dog, and trained and competed with more than one dog. Go and observe some of the classes both beginner's and advanced. Talk to the people and the staff if you can.
