    DefaultNovice A/B question

    Hi everyone!

I have a question... I have Henry entered in his first AKC rally trial in a few weekends. I entered him in Novice A since (according to the AKC rally rulebook) he hasn't earned any AKC rally titles nor any AKC obedience titles.

However, he does have his CARO Novice A (not affiliated with CKC).

Am I still good in AKC Novice A or should I be in B??

    Thanks, in advance!

I think the ONLY stipulation is you can have an AKC obedience title. You don't, so Novice A is fine.

He would be in Novice A. AKC does not recognize any other club's titles ;D

Nope...that only applies in obedience. Rally only cares about the dog and the dog's titles for Novice.

And Linda said it best...AKC doesn't recognize any other registries so you could have a UKC OTCH on the dog and they wouldn't care, you'd still be in Nov A.

Not true. If the handler has put an AKC obedience title on ANY dog, it has to go into Novice B.

The Rally Novice A Class. Dogs competing in this
class may not have won an AKC Rally Novice (RN)
title or any AKC obedience title. A handler must own
the dog entered or be a member of the owner’s
household or immediate family. The handler may not
have previously handled any dog that has earned an
AKC rally title or any AKC obedience title.
    A person
may enter more than one dog in this class. After a dog
earns the Rally Novice (RN) title, it may continue to
compete in this class for 60 days. No dog may be
entered in both Rally Novice A and Rally Novice B at
    any one trial.
The Rally Novice B Class. Any dog may compete in
this class until a qualifying score in the Rally
Advanced Class is earned. The owner or any other
person may handle dogs in this class. A person may
enter more than one dog in this class. No dog may be
entered in both Rally Novice A and Rally Novice B at
    any one trial.

So what about Rally Advanced and Expert though?

Let's say I have a CD title, I will compete in Rally Novice B, and say I get my RN. What about Advanced and Expert? Will I also compete in B across the board?

You will have to compete in Rally Advanced B if the CD is an AKC title.

"The Rally Advanced A Class shall be for dogs that
have won the Rally Novice (RN) title but have not won
the Rally Advanced (RA) title or any AKC obedience
    title
    ."

Similarly, you will have to compete in Rally Excellent B if the CD is an AKC title.

"The Rally Excellent A Class shall be for dogs that
have won the Rally Advanced (RA) title, but have not
won the Rally Excellent (RE) title or any AKC
    obedience title
    ."

I compete with Belle in the B classes (Novice through Excellent) because she has her CDX

With Kodi and Hoss, I competed in Novice B, but in Advanced and Excellent, they were in the A classes, because THEY did not have an AKC obedience title. Actually, the rules are just as they are in regular obedience. Novice A is only for the total rookies to ANY kind of AKC obedience, whether Rally or regular obedience. (Well, I *think* you can enter Novice A in regular obedience if you have Rally titles, but have never shown in regular obedience, but I wouldn't take my word on that...)

So, yes Jen, with the dog that has the CD, you will compete in the B classes from Novice to Excellent. Any new pup, you would go into Novice B and then Advanced A and Excellent A until they earn those titles
