I like the weight of the wooden dumbbells (my throwing ability sucks!!) and it seems to land better.

I actually use both. Caleb would not take wood at first so I went to plastic. He loves it and rolls and plays with it. I have gone back to wood because he does not roll it around as much nor does he play with it. Plus, it does not bounce when I throw it. Though I practice, I don't throw well either!

So, not to confuse things but I carry one of each with me and depending on the day and ring conditions will determin which I use.

I prefer the plastic ones. Ruger tends to "chew" as he holds it and the wooden one would be mince-meat in no time.

We show outside here and our ground is just like concrete therefore I use plastic. I've seen numerous wooden DB break apart on the throw. Then what do you do? If you don't have a spare, it's all over for you.

If Caleb continues to do well with a wooden db I will invest in either a custom made one piece db or buy a one piece db

I always carry a spare one. The wooden ones I have are one piece and are from max200.

I've seen other competitors lend theirs.

Ha! But they must not have finicky dogs. Murray does not like other dog spit. He will not drink after another dog nor use another dog's toys...that includes the DB.

While Emilu and I have not competed with dumbbells yet, I found I had a terrible time with her when using the plastic one. We switched to a wooden one and are doing much better.

I have yet to see Kona refuse to pick up anything I send him for!! Guess I'm really lucky that way.
