DefaultJust entered Scotty into UKC Sub-Novice class

Our trainer suggested that we try to do UKC's sub-novice class on July 8th and 9th. It will mostly be a disaster, but it will be good in terms of getting Scotty used to the ring. It will be interesting to see where he is as far as working for me w/o his training prong collar or treats. I'm excited nonetheless. It will be our first ever obedience event. ;D

Is UKC sub novice similar to AKC pre-novice (everything on lead)? I'm sure you'll do fine. Your instructor wouldn't tell you to go if she didn't have faith that you would do well (at least I hope she wouldn't tell you to go). I think we are a lot harder on ourselves.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Well, we went to our regular training lesson today, and Evelyn (the trainer) gave us a no-go. With bar classes and work, I was not able to get Scotty where we wanted him to be. So, we've decided that it would be better to wait rather then go in the rings and mess up big time. We're going to watch anyway. It will be fun: everybody is encouraged to wear red, white, and blue. And then, there is lunch for everybody. Thanks for good wishes though.

Better safe than sorry for that kind of stuff. Sure don't want Scotty thinking that goofing off in the ring is o.k. (or at least does not have consequences). Are there any correction matches in your area?

Evelyn has several other students that are at the same level as Scotty and I. So, she's going to try to get together next Sunday to do a fun match where we can correct our dogs. Otherwise, I don't think there are any other fun matches planned. :-\

    Correction matches are very helpful.

Even in regulation matches, I "corrected" Belle on occaision. The matches don't count for anything anyways, so if for example, Belle was going to go around on a jump, I'd use an extra signal to redirect her over the jump (did that at a regulation show too...NQ'd us of course, but it was a multiple offense, so I wasn't going to let her get away with it!!). If she twitched too much on a stay, I'd "ACK" at her. I'd give extra commands on heel if she lagged. Just so that it was not a physical correction, and not excessive. What are the judges going to do other than give you a zero? Better than letting them make a mistake!

I've given extra commands/corrections at shows also .......... We've already NQ'ed and the worst that will happen is the judge will excuse us. I've never been excused for that, but have been for broken stays and a dog running around the ring with the zoomies!! :P

If you really watch some of the top handlers in your area, they all train in the ring but it is very difficult to detect.
