Update on Top Dog
Well Saturday was the Top Dog Event in Southern California and the Labs did quite well in the team competition finishing with a 2nd place overall. A team for Top Dog is composed of 6 dogs (2 Novice,2 Open and 2 Utility). I was one of the Open dogs and Amber did OK with a 193.5. For Top Dog dogs cannot have a leg in a higher class so Utility dogs cannot compete in Open, also this competition is open to any dog (pure breed, mix breed, three legged dogs, etc.) Most of the clubs are obedience clubs with a few breed clubs competing (breed clubs are limited to only their breed). The forum is 6 rings (2 novice 2 open 2 utility) with each person getting one run thru (Groups are first). so the maximum score for a team is 1200 points (200x 6 dogs) then they take the top 4 dogs from each ring (8 novice, 8 open, 8 utility) and run them thru again for individual placements.
The big upset this year was that the dominant team (mostly aussies and all the top trainers in the area at least one with an NOC) placed third!! The goldens won it and the labs were second. We had a score of 1112 (One of our utility teams failed the Signal exercise and so only had a 154 Score. There are not alot of labs doing obedience in Socal so we pretty much take any warm body. It was a blast to do so well and watch all the dogs run thru!
