    DefaultTrial with a bad foot

I think I know the answer, but thought I would double check with those of you who do so many OB/Rally trials.

Maddy has a bad foot. It may possibly heal and scab over by the weekend (crossed fingers BIG TIME). I don't think she'll limp on it. I suppose it's not legal to have her foot wrapped, huh??

I have her in a 3 day trial for 3 RAE legs, and she gave herself a HUGE sore on her foot.

I need tons of good wishes to help her foot heal enough to walk without a bandage.

It can't be helped if we can't compete, but it's sure a HUGE waste of $129.

That's a bummer - I hope her foot heals up and will send "healing thoughts" her way. At our trial last weekend, I saw my first dog that was excused from the ring for limping. It was a big Newfie. I was the table steward and had glanced up at the dog and thought "I think that dog is limping", then it didn't appear to be, but later the judge excused it for limping, although the owner tried to say that it was just the way the dog walked. I talked to someone later who knew that the dog actually had a hurt joint.

My understanding is that at an AKC trial, no dog can be shown with any type of bandage. I do hope your pup is OK for the trial. Is there any way to keep her in your car until just before she's in the ring? That way maybe you could keep a bandage on until the last minute. I don't know what the exact rules are regarding an injury a judge could see and whether that would stop you, but I know from personal experience you cannot have a bandage on in the Rally ring.

Ruger tore a nickel sized chunk off his pad the day before a trial. I got some of the EMT gel and used that a couple times during the night before, and when we got to the trial, I used it right before we ran. I was very concerned he'd limp and we'd be excused, but he didn't limp at all and actually had a nice run (no Q, but a nice effort).

It puts a coating over the cut and also numbs it.

I can buy it at our local feed stores.

    Just a thought.

Got the EMT gel already! I am going to take the bandage off tomorrow and see what it's like. The boys are having similar problems (this is all due to grass burrs) and Jackson's seemed to do remarkably better in a few days. And I think her limping is due to the foot being wrapped. The trial is at a small venue close to home, so it will be easy to keep her in the shade in my car until showtime.

Thanks for the good wishes, we are hoping for legs 5, 6, and 7!!!

Her foot seems to be better and we pulled off Leg 5 yesterday with a 97 in RA and an 85 in RE (someone didn't want to do the back up 3 steps in heel and I didn't retry since I could tell her mood...).

2 more days left of this trial.

Good job! Glad the foot is doing better.

You know, I used to tell Ruger, "back, back, back" for the 3 steps back, and sometimes he'd do it, sometimes not. Then one day I wondered, "why I am telling him back?" Instead I just step back and tell him to "heel" and he does it perfectly. I never could figure out why I started telling him "back". Go figure. Heel he knows...he can find heel no matter what direction we are going.

Just throwing that out there if you are using "back" vs "heel".
