    DefaultDoggie Shampoo/Food

I have a new five-month-old black lab mix with a bad scratching issue (she's even started biting off some of the fur on her feet). What should I use to bathe her? The vet says she just has bad allergies, which I guess is common in labs.

Also, what brand of food would you all recommend? I hear the name brands are like fast food...

    Thanks!

Our Sophie has allergies too. She was chewing off her hair, and had a rash and whelps, especially on her inner thighs. She also had several ear infections. Allergic dogs get repeated ear infections. The first thing our vet did was have us change her food. He said that grain, especially corn is often the culprit. Some dogs are also allergic to chicken or lamb. So he had us chose a food that was grain free and with a protein she had never had before. Since she had not had salmon, we chose a salmon/white fish grain free food. He said to feed her nothing else for 6 weeks. Within 2 weeks, she had stopped scratching and her hair was growing back. Also, some dogs are highly allergic to fleas. Make sure your dog is flea free. Our vet put Sohie on Comfortis. A flea product that is taken orally. It works super! It doesn't take care of ticks though, so if you live in a tick area, you may need to use K-9 Advantix. Be careful bathing. Frequent bathing can make the problem worse. We only bathe Sophie if she gets into something yucky, then we use a mild dog shampoo without flea killers or insecticides.

She may just have environmental allergies, in which case leaving her out during the day for a long time is problematic. Did the vet suggest a course of Benedryl to see if her allergies respond?

What did the vet suggest feeding or doing?

I bath Tessa in Malaseb and an oatmeal rinse. They can be allergic to food, environment, bugs, or any number of things. To see if it is food the vet will suggest an elimination diet. A novel protein for a specific period and no other food. Not one morsel which means being very careful they don't get into trash or vacuum the floor.

Many of us with allergy dogs are different. At the moment the 2 vets treating Tessa have very different views on allergies. Only thing they agree on is allergies are hard to control, unless you find the trigger. So you see there is no one size fits all. Even with allergy testing there may not be an answer.
