Hi I have my 19 month old yellow lab, Gatsby that I am having growling problems with.
He has been to obedience, got our beginner novice, & Rally Novice titles, very socialized with people, he grew up in a nursing home, & is with me at work,@ our restaurant constantly, but every now & then he lets a low growl out when my Mom pets him or talks to him, if someone else comes up to pet him at work, even if I go up to pet him when he's in my recliner at home.
Sometimes it sounds like a low warning growl, with my Mom it is like they're talking, she's in her recliner, he's in the one right next to her, or next to her wheelchair.
Still I don't like it, I want to go for CGC but not comfortable with this growling.
How do I stop this? Thanks for the help.
He must be getting some reward from doing it, so you'll need to figure out what that is to first stop rewarding the behavior. As you probably know, If he grumbles during CGC, you should be failed.

I would have a behaviorist look at your dog. Some dogs are talkers, and you will need someone THERE to help you understand if your dog is growling or just making a noise.
But if he growls at you when you approach him when he is sitting on your chair, you will need to stop allowing him to sit on the furniture. I would bet the dog thinks HE rules the house, not you.
