I am getting a new lab this week. I think he is 3-4 years old (rescue). What meds do you guys recommend for heartworm/flea protection? Also any good places to buy them.
I use Interceptor for HW because it covers other type of worms and Labs eat anything (rabbit poop and the like).
I buy mine from my vet. Keep in mind that Novartis (maker of Inter) and most other companies will not guarantee their product if you buy it on line. Only if you buy from a vet - and the dog gets HW they will pay for treatment.
Since he is a rescue - do you know if he has been on HW pills? If not he should be tested for HW before beginning the monthly pills.
I do not have a problem with fleas so have never used a preventative. The less chemicals in my dogs the better IMO.
Me either. I use Ivermec for my dogs with the dosage figured out by my vet.Originally Posted by Snowco Labradors

Another Interceptor user here. When I have used flea and tick preventive it's been Frontline.
So do you guys only do frontline when you find a tick on him?
I use interceptor, and I've yet to find a tick or a flea on my boys, they get dosed twice a year with frontline plus...and that is usually only when I bring home a foster that has fleas. Otherwise, they are in the fields hunting and playing all of the time, and not tick problems here.

Interceptor & Frontline Plus here.
Frontline doesn't require a prescription to be bought.
Interceptor does so, if you want it from someone else other than your local vet, you must get a vet's Rx. In SOME states, vets do NOT have to give you one -- or can charge you for it. In some other states, by state regs they must give you a Rx without charge if you ask for one.

I use Interceptor & Frontline Plus. I get them from my vet.
I use it based on where I am. Mick was allergic to fleas. I swear, all that dog had to do was see a flea and he was chewing and scratching, which resulted in a hot spot. Until Mick was 7, we lived at a camp, complete with 260 acres of woods and fields. Because ticks were plentiful there, too, I applied Frontline once a month. I've only used Frontline maybe once since we moved from there. That was when we took Mick to Florida with us to visit my in-laws.Originally Posted by chappys4life
Interceptor here for heartworm. I don't use anything preventatively for fleas or ticks. I figure if I keep them healthy and their immune systems strong, and they do get fleas or a tick, we'll deal with it at that time, rather than giving them poison monthly.
