Do you find that your dogs get more build up in their ears in the summer when it's warmer and they swim more? I find that I need to clean Rocky's ears pretty much daily so they stay clear of waxy build up. His left ear is worse than his right for some reason.
I haven't cleaned Caleb's ears since right after switching his food at the beginning of March. They've been nice and pink ever since. Mick was the one who swam in the lake a lot (we lived at a camp for the first 7 years of his life). Once I figured out what foods he was allergic to, I don't remember having to clean his ears any more often in the summer than in the cooler weather.
I use epi-otic ear cleaner in my dogs ear and no I don't see more wax because I cleaned them. If you are using a good ear cleaner than it should work and not make the ear wrose. If you are seeing lots of wax or it has a smell to it than there is most likely an ear infection.
