well my little girl just turned 6 months on Aug 19. She got to celebrate her big day covered in sores, vomiting and massive itching spells.
Bella is miserable.
2 months ago we took her to the vet with hives- ended up being a food allergy to all beef products. I was skeptical of this but agreed to the food trials and antibiotic course.
now here we are.. she has weeping sores, large crusted sores, and she is having a difficult time with urinating do to all the sores on her bottom.
her hair is falling out in massive tuffs. even her eyes have sores in the corners of them.
she is still her perky puppy self. her appetite is ok. it could be better.
i took her to the vet as soon as i got off work yesterday morning. She was incontinent of stool when i got home. So i threw my hands up and took her to the vet on a saturday.
Of course the vet techs were not happy i just showed up with my sick dog. But luckily the Dr came around the corner and saw her and said "holy mess!" and i was promptly escorted back.
the dx: puppy strangles. aka juvenile cellulitis.
the Dr said she was a little old for puppy strangle (even at 6 months old) but after a scratch test for mange ( our 2nd scratch test in 2 months) she was negative.
So now she is 47 lbs. the antibiotic course has been increased do to her weight. she is on prednisolone 20mg pills twice a day. and we have to wash 2-3x a week in a Hexedene wash.
I am so discouraged right now. Bella is my first puppy ever. I feel like I am letting her down as a parent! I can't get her well. and as a RN, i get so frustrated when I realize she isn't getting better with meds! I love my puppy to death, but I don't know how to make her feel better.
The Dr. says if she doesnt get any better with this course of sterioids and abx, she will have to be put on a prescription food.
here are some pics of Bella this morning..
some are taken in her kennel because she is a little hyper for the camera
Oh poor, poor Bella! I am so sorry you are going through this. I can totally sympathize with your frustration. I was in tears when Guthrie went through his hive ordeal.
I am sorry I had not mentioned this in my post to you before...after his first 3-4 day course of pred and Benadryl the hives returned with a beefy rash and both vets came in to look at him because it was unusual. They discussed the possibility of puppy strangles....also saying he was really too old for that. Not sure what the diagnosis ever was but they ramped his pred way up and put him on antibiotics(I believe two different ones..I'll try to find my old post)
Your last post from the Aug. 10th said Bella had hives for 2 weeks and this post says 2 months. Was the other a typo?

Found the old post...I had forgotten lots of the details and how much of a saga it was....and Guthrie was only sick for a few weeks....two months...ugh. I just can't imagine. Hang in there....you and Bella will be in my thoughts. You get through this and, in time, it will be (hopefully and thankfully) a distant memory like our is.

I think you are right about the dates. When we went to the vet yesterday The Dr said it had been 2 months-
Bella did not have a good night at all.
She fell asleep only to have woken up covered in her own urine. So we bathed her at 3am. It was so weird because I had just taken her to potty at 1am. She was so ashamed she had teetee'd in her kennel. But she got lots of hugs and kisses from Mommy. i just want her to feel better
Just touching her makes her wince. The sores on her bottom burn when she pees and she whimpers thru the whole thing.
Just wish there was something I could do to make her not hurt. She is so precious! Thanks again for commenting!
I read thru the posts you sent and they are all what bella is going thru.
Her face doesn't look so bad, but her ears are just terrible.
thanks so much!
brandi & bella boo
I'm sorry Bella had a rough night. It really was/is a terrible thing for these poor pups to be on such high doses of Pred which cause them to drink and urinate constantly....right at a time they have mastered potty training. I remember the look on Guthrie's face the night I overslept(I had been setting my alarm to get up) and he was sitting, dejected, in his crate covered in pee. I felt like the worse mom ever.
One idea, something the breeder suggested when I first brought Guthrie home....get an exercise pen and put some remnant vinyl flooring down(it is cheap at Lowes)...you can actually attach the crate to the exercise pen...that way she can sleep in the crate but if she really has to go potty she can get out and go...that way you dont' have to be getting up at all hours to take her out or even worse find her soaked in urine. That pred is evil stuff but it works. I remember Guthrie had to pee every 2 hours or less when he was on it.
((((Hugs)))) to your pup.
I hope they find a diagnosis for Bella & she gets better. Poor baby.
I just read this, and I wanted to say how sorry I am that you and Bella are having to go through this. It sounds absolutely awful. I also have my first lab pup - 12 wks old - and have been moping today because of a minor health issue I just learned about, but it's nothing compared to what you're experiencing! You sound like a very loving, concerned, attentive owner. I'm sure you're doing all the right things. Hang in there. I'm so sorry.
Poor Bella! I hope she is now getting the right Rx and will be feeling better soon. Poor girl...
Poor Bella, lots of prayer coming her way for a speedy full recovery. Your being a good mom, don't beat yourself up. My first lab Casey suffered w chronic ear infections for years. It is frustrating and heartbreaking to see our babies suffer. I hope and pray she will heal soon.
WOW my sister sent me a case just like Bella's!!
I hope she gets better.
