    DefaultQuestion about Oils?

I have been reading about putting oils in with your dogs meals to help with dry/sensitive skin. If I were to start putting Flaxseed Oil into Milly's dinner how much would be ideal?

And is Flaxseed Oil the best one there is for her or is there another one that is better?

What i've read on the subject (on the board) is that salmon oil is the best for coat/skin.

if you feed a good enough kibble, you shouldn't have to add oils.

some dogs have an intolerance to flaxseed.

EPA/DHA fish oils are the best. They come in capsules. Be sure the product includes vitamine E. If not you need to supplement with it to prevent defficiency.

I make my own oil combo:

    5 oz olive oil
1 oz cod liver oil or salmon oil
    1 oz wheat germ oil
1 oz safflower oil or sunflower or sunflower oil

I give about a tablespoon per day.

Dry food is dry, some dogs do not do well on any kibble and need the extra fats from the oils to keep coat and skin healthy.

Dani - I am sure that is correct but over here there is nowhere NEAR the selection of kibble that you have in the States. Most pet stores and vets recommend Hills Science Diet as "the best there is"

This is fine, but I would caution on the cod liver oil. Not the same as fish or salmon oil. Make doubly sure it is mercury free. Remember, the liver is a detoxifing organ, and if the aminal is from a "toxic" environment, the liver will hold some of the toxins, of which can find its way into the oil. Fish oil or salmon oil is a "muscle/skin oil" not an organ (liver) oil, hence less potential toxins.

Any oil is good, but I prefer fish oil. That is the only source of EPA and DHA.

Ditto, I'd avoid the cod liver oil.
