My female lab who will be 4 soon has been leaking urine when she lays down. She seems very surprised when it happens. she is prefectly house trained so I dont understand why this is happening.
My wife said she needs hormones and has lost muscle tone from being spayed but I dont want to give her drugs. Are there any other ways to fix this issue without giving the dog hardcore hormone treatments? Thanks for the help. This is a wonderful resource for lab people.
Chriopractic adjustments and acupuncture treatments work wonders for incontinence.
Our other Lab, a spayed female, had spay incontinence and was on DES (diethylstilbestrol) (1mg twice a week) off and on over the years. She had no problems with it. That was the only treatment offered. And it is due to hormonal insufficiency. Good luck.

Proin (phenylpropanolamine or PPA) is another drug which is often used to treat spay incontinence. Some people have tried cornsilk as a holistic treatment, but I have no idea if it works or how well. My GSD is on a combination of PPA and DES because DES by itself didn't work. She's been on it for almost 3 years now and hasn't had any undesirable side effects.
From what I have heard Proin does work but as a dog ages often the dose needs to be increased and this is where side effects may occur. Although I don't know what those side effects are.
My sister had a dog on DES and she did fine for years with no side effects.
I also agree with checking for a UTI first.
Definately check for a UTI. My 9 year old girl has been incontinent since her spay at 6 months (too early but I didn't know any better at the time and listened to my vet). She's been on Proin all those years and no side effects. I have given her less than the vet recommended - every third day vs twice a day.
