Hello - Our 6 year old chocolate male was recently diagnosed with immune-mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA). Prior to this, he's always been healthy, active and fit. The diagnosis was a complete shock, along with the emergency blood transfusion and five days in the hospital. Good news is his blood levels are completely back to normal and we've eliminated all of his initial medication except for a very small dose of prednisone that we're weaning him off of now. Because of his miraculous and speedy recovery, the vet now thinks his case was not a primary case of the disease, which is wonderful news...but, it leaves us with the frustrating question of WHAT caused this to begin with?? And, will it happen again?? Per the vet's recommendation, we have decided to never vaccinate him again, but beyond that, we're not sure what changes, if any, we should make. Has anyone experienced this diagnosis? If so, any advice to offer?
Did he recently have his vaccines? Can you remember anything that happened within a few weeks of the onset of his IMHA such as anything he could have gotten into- medication, bugs/spiders, plants, etc? Unfortunately, while there is usually a "trigger" of some sort to make the immune system do this, sometimes with immune system diseases, you may never find a cause. I'm glad he's feeling better and is being weaned off of his medications so successfully!
Here is a really good overview of IMHA that includes diagrams, pictures, and links to a couple of other sites: http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Con...S=0&C=0&A=1390

Was he tested for Lymes and other tick borne illnesses?

Thank you for your reply. His last vaccine prior to the diagnosis was seven months prior, so the vets don't think that was the trigger. We have not had him tested for Lyme's or other insect related illnesses, so that may be something for us to consider.
Has he been on any medication recently? My Kelly went into AIHA from being put on tri-meth sulfa drugs for an infection. She survived the initial problem.
