My lab Reefy, is on heat for the first time. She is about a week into it and she is just not quite herself. She looks lathargic and not so playfull. She is eating fine, no problems there.
I was wondering is it normal for Labs to feel sick when they are on heat? In the same way humans can feel sick when they have their period?
Right about this time is when she will do anything to "get some", if I'm not mistaken. You have to watch her like a hawk, do not let her outside without 100% supervision and a leash. Even if you have a fenced yard!!
Macy acted similar when she went into heat. She had one thing on her mind. (only once, thank God, she was spayed a couple of months later). It's not a fun time.

They can be a bit precious or delicate I've heard. Mine don't care.

In a word.....YES. For some dogs this is normal behavior. Watch her like a hawk. It only takes a second for a male to breed her and they can do it through fences.

But Laura, they can only breed through fences if you don't want them to. LOLOLOL Forget it if it's a planned breeding. In that case it will require a collection and AI to make it possible.
Are you using the panties on her?
Lily will be going through one heat cycle before being spayed for medical reasons and I am not at all looking forward to it. I saw that there was special underwear for dogs in heat (or incontinent, I suppose) and it just feels awfully silly trying to get her to wear them. If not, though, what do you do about the mess?
My Lily was off on her first cycle. Now she could care less.
Ahh love through the fences....I remember when I was a kid I came home from school to find our Lab and a roaming beagle tied though the kennel. She dug herself a convenient hole to lower herself to his level. Clever, eh? Where there is a will, there is a way.
She will be ok. She probably has cramps and doesn't know why she can't keep clean. As long as the discharge doesn't stink she is fine.
what age? I have a new female puppy and want to get her spayed but wanted to wait until she was a little older. She is 5 1/2 months old. I have an entact male that I will spay after hunting season. any advice on when to spay a female
