    Defaultfeeding and pooping question

My spot is 14 months old. I feed him 1 cup Kirkland C&R twice a day (mornings and evenings) and has kept him on this food since he was 12 months old. Originally he got 3 cups per day but I reduced it to 2 cups upon the vet's recommendation that he needs to shed some weight (he weighed 95 lbs at the last checkup). He is a big boy though and we always knew it. His dad was a 100 lbs big-boned boy.

As far as I can tell, he is doing fine on Kirkland C&R. His poop looks good (not loose) and he is happy and healthy. However I do worry that he poops too much for the amount of food he gets. He poops 2 times every day and when he was on 3 cups feeding he sometimes poops 3 times a day. I am talking about nice, firm poop that is not loose at all.

I am curious how much you feed your labs and how much they poop per day? Should I switch food?

    Thanks for any inputs!

Most dogs will poop for each feeding. So two feedings = two poops is a great routine. Rocky is the same (2 feedings, 2 poops).
If we have a day with more exercise than usual he may throw in an extra poop along the way

as for food, dont' change what isn't broken! If she is doing well (and is healthy) on the food you use now you may as well stay on that. changing foods become a bad cycle, been there done that! sometimes what looks good on paper just doesn't do well with your dog.

That sounds normal to me too! Two poops a day is fine.

1-3 per day is normal for most dogs.

Other factors can also effect the amount a dog poops -- exercise (stimulates the bowels), stress, anxiety, exuberance, etc.

Puff has been on 1.25 cups of Kirkland C&R 2X/day for years.

She poops 1 - 2X on our every morning 40-60 min. off leash walks in a nearby nature preserve. The first poop comes within a minute (around 6:30 AM) and a usual second occurs 15-30 minutes later after a number of retrieves.

2 PM is her next pooping time and she lets me know what time it is by incessant licking of my face or hands until we go out. One poop.

10 PM is the next, ditto the 2 PM.

    For the day, 3 - 4 poops.

    ADDED AFTERTHOUGHT

Puff's poops are smaller than those of most other Labs. I always pick them up immediately after she delivers them using a Glad thin film plastic sandwich bag. They typically mold to the size of a golf ball, occasionally slightly bigger -- about the size of a handball. So, although Puff poops more often than many Labs, her total amount (volume) is probably similar or even less.

We're on the 2 feedings, 2 poops schedule as well. Sounds normal to me.
