    DefaultGlucosamine and Fish oil

So our one year old lab has been on Synovi for a few months. I am now trying to find something a little bit cheaper that I don't have to mail order.

I picked up a Glucosamine, Chondroitin and MSM with Gelatine suppliment today at the drug store. Its NutraJoint by Knox. Has anyone used this or know if it is safe or not?

Also picked up just a general 1200 mg Fish Oil at the same time. This is safe too, right?

A lot of people use human-grade G/C supplements and fish oil for their dogs.

Both should be fine. Glucosamine, etc. is a nutraceutical so it's safe, fish oil is supplemented by tons of people, also safe.

I use a similar glucosamine mixture, as seen here: http://www.omegaalpha.ca/product/99/...aPet&trade%3B/

Sounds similar to yours, so it should be fine.

Okay, cool. That makes me feel better about giving it to them. I just always want to check before I give my babies something new.

As long as the diet is balanced, those supplements certainly should pose no risks to an otherwise healthy dog-- what part do you disagree with (or was it the generalization about all neutraceuticals being safe, which is false)?

I've given 2 Fish oil caps daily here (kirkland brand) along w/ vit e 3x/wk to balance for years. I give my youngsters Glucosamine sulfate for their first 2 yrs (until OFAs are done) of life, then put them back on it at age 10 or so. Also have given MSM to each of us daily for the past 8 yrs or so. Of course, I've had a holistic vet review our diet as part of our exam too, so feel comfortable about what I supplement with. Anne

I guess I have issues with people assuming just because it's natural or neutraceutical, it's perfectly safe to give. I had a friend who gave her Golden Retriever fish oil capsules only to find out the hard way he had a bleeding issue, noted by extensive bruising and other complications. Fish oil should not be given if you have a bleeding disorder. Also, though extremely rare, glucosamine can cause insulin resistance. That being said, I gave my previous dog human-grade G/C.

but it's different when you give capsules.
i give fish oil to my dog maybe once in 5 days.not much.
but i mix it with regular food because it's in liquid.
i doubt it can hurt the dog!

What are capsules a magic bullet or something? If you're only giving something every 5 days, you're fooling yourself into thinking it's doing anything at all.

ANYTHING can harm a dog, is what Betsy is saying, including "Natural" or Herbal supplements.
