How often should you clip your lab's nails? I thought I had heard somewhere that clipping regularly would make the quick receed farther back each time (eventually shortening the nails to a better length). Now I'm wondering if clipping is only making Jonah's nails grow faster and longer! He's had them clipped once a week since he was 10 weeks, but they still seem like talons to me for a puppy!
Also, any suggestions on a way to do the darker nails that it is harder to see the quick (for example, his dew claw nails are clear, I can see it very easily. Some of his other nails have some brown where it's hard to see where it is, so I am not cutting very much at all each time).
Thanks for any thoughts!
I clip my girls nails once a week. They are both black & I am afraid to cut the quick, so I just take the tips off.
I dremel every week or so.
Here is a link to dremeling that also explains how to "see" the quick in dark nails (almost at the bottom of the page)
I do mine weekly with the dremel.
Never. Daily road work keeps them at the correct length.
Everyone here has dark nails except Scout (JRT) who has a couple dark but mostly light I take a little off with the clippers at a time. When you see a small white (light colored) dot in the middle of the nail, the quick is coming so stop. I tried dremmeling (sp?) but I prefer my clippers. I torture them once a week
